Summary :

The "Benton Judgement of line orientation" test (BJLO), commonly known in France "barres de Benton" is sometimes used by occupational therapists to de-termine the efficiency of the directional visual perception by discriminating and comparing the orientation of two segments differently oriented. We question the validity of use of a 35 year old American-calibration test in France because of possible cultural variances. We offer a recalibration on a cohort of 245 children of Ile de France, ages 7 to 10 years (from CE1 to CM2), using one of the short form of the test, including 3 examples and 15 test items. Two rating types have been implemented: the original quotation by one point and a second item – created by the author – one point per correct answer. Statistical analyzes have shown that the results are statistically similar between the original and the new calibration. Finally, the creation of a second scoring system (grade B) seems relevant to the diagnostic distinction between purely visual-perceptual disorders and disorders of attention and executive functions.
