Summary :

This article concerning a professional practice, explores the value of the Occupational Performance Coaching (OPC) approach in occupational therapy support for a young adult with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD has significant impacts on the adult’s occupational participation, employment, daily routines and sense of competence. Faced with complaints that are often vague and low self-esteem, the occupational therapist seeks intervention approaches that promote engagement, meaning and sustainable changes.
Through the clinical case of Mr H, a 25 year-old man, the article demonstrates how the OPC approach, based on a humanistic perspective and self-determination theory, promotes autonomy, self-understanding and transition to action. The support provided is based on coaching conversations focused on meaningful occupational goals, developed jointly with the individual, while drawing on their resources and expertise. Strategies emerge from collaborative performance analysis and can be directly applied to daily life.
The results highlight an improvement in occupational participation, a stabilization of changes, a generalization of strategies and a strengthened sense of competence measured, as measured in particular by a tool from the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. The article also discusses the limitations of the approach (eligible population, duration, cost, interaction with medication) and highlights the lack of specific scientific data for adults with ADHD. It concludes by noting the promising potential of OPC and the need for future research to clarify the conditions for its use.
