Summary :
Introduction. Although the professional values on which occupational therapy is based are constitutive of the professional identity of occupational therapists, few empirical studies have documented their implementation in practice by French occupational therapists.
Objectives. The objectives of the study were to : 1) to identify the values that are easiest and most difficult to implement in practice and 2) to document the nature of barriers and facilitators to implement these values in professional practice.
Methodology. The results reported in this article are the outcomes of a cross-sectional descriptive study in which 149 French occupational therapists took part.
Results. Firstly, empathy is the value that is perceived as the easiest to implement in practice by the greatest number of occupational therapists, while innovation is the value that is perceived as the most difficult to implement in practice by the greatest number of participants. Second, the barriers to professional value implementation that occupational therapists believe they encounter most frequently are related to their organization (meso-environment) or to the society (macro-environment), while their facilitators are essentially related to individuals and their interactions (micro-environment).
Conclusion. The results of this study show a change in the professional identity of French occupational therapists, in that they differ from the findings of previous studies. The results regarding the nature of the most frequent barriers and facilitators are similar to those of a similar survey conducted in Quebec, thus highlighting a degree of universality in the experience of occupational therapists in terms of the implementation of the profession’s core professional values in practice.
