Summary :
Work is a component of human health and well-being (Matuska, 2016). It contributes to one’s identity (OEQ, 2021) and accom-plishments. However, this occupation can quickly lead to harmful consequences for the person if the time and the meaning given by him/her is not in harmony with what he/she wants. Occupational balance, core concept of occupational therapy, must be taken in consideration. Searching for a job can be extremely difficult if not impossible for people with disabilities. Vocational integration for people with disabilities in a mainstream workplace is a major challenge for our society. This specific field includes a variety of establishments such as Establishments and Support Services through Outside Work (ESAT HM), in which occupational therapists can practice. They will help people with disabilities on how to deal with occupational imbalances due to a new job.
Firstly, this article will recall the importance of occupation and work in human functioning and the value of occupational balance in this dynamic. Secondly, the key-role of occupational therapists, using the concept of occupational balance, will be described. Thirdly, the concept of occupational balance modifying the practice of occupational therapists working in the ESAT of Châtillon will be presented. Lastly, we will expose the benefits and the limits of integrating occupational balance in occupational therapist practice.
