Summary :
Introduction. Virtual reality is a tool that is increasingly accessible, offering numerous practical advantages. Nevertheless, it is underused for high school students’ orientation. With the introduction of Parcoursup in 2020, a selective system to access to higher education, it is important to promote and ease their understanding of our profession. The objective of this study was to assess the satisfaction, knowledge and understanding of high school students on occupational therapy when an immersive support in virtual reality was used compared to a traditional slideshow.
Methodology. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 32 high school students during the open days of our OT school. The evaluation of occupational therapy’s knowledge was conducted before and after the presentation, using a knowledge quiz. The evaluation of occupational therapy’s understanding and the assessment of the appreciation of the support provided were conducted after the presentation.
Results. Even though the difference between the scores of the two supports was not statistically significant, the virtual reality support was perceived as more effective in conveying an understanding of the profession of occupational therapist. The virtual reality support was also more appreciated.
Conclusion. Those results suggest that it would be beneficial to develop new video capsules to cover other fields of intervention of occupational therapy and other target audiences, such as university students or professionals.
