Summary :

The number of occupational therapy students has increased significantly over the last ten years in France. This results in a need for additional placements at the national level which occupational therapy schools (IFE) are finding increasingly difficult to obtain.
Within the framework of occupational therapy (OT) schools in France (SIFEF) a working group carried out two surveys ; one with IFEs (Charret et al., 2024a) and another with internship tutors (Charret et al., 2024b) in order to find out the reasons and identify possible solutions
Following the results of these surveys, it seemed interesting to consult students to better understand their experiences and placement conditions in this context of shortage.
1234 students (about a third per year of training) responded to this survey concerning their placement experiences. They testify to their criteria for choosing placements, their preparation beforehand, the difficulties encountered and their expectations of tutors and occupational therapy schools. The results show that students choose placements primary based on the practice area of occupational therapy intervention and that the major difficulties encountered are linked to missing theoretical knowledge, the relational link with tutors. To successfully complete their placements, trust with the tutor emerges as an essential element. The tutor is considered as the preferred contact for resolving difficulties encountered during the placement. Students mention a desire for change in the organization of placements with more involvement on their part.
