Summary :
Background:
Health and safety of workers is a major concern especially because many workers are injured daily in the course of their work. Several means can be put in place in order to reduce the number of work-related accidents, including promoting the adoption of prevention behavior among workers.
Aim:
Gather the perspectives of novice and experienced workers to describe their perceptions of adopting the preventive behavior.
Method:
This is a qualitative case study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants recruited with network sampling. Subsequently, a content analysis allowed the emergence of several themes.
Results:
The themes raised in the participants’ verbatim were : lack of knowledge, importance of health and safety, habits and routines, speed requirements, communication with colleagues, negative consequences, personal preferences, influence of the workplace, task analysis, enforcement role and work environment.
Discussion:
Perceptions of novice and experienced workers are summarized and compared. In addition, courses of action to act in primary prevention of work accidents as an occupational therapist are developed.
Conclusion:
This trial could not establish that work experience influences the adoption of the prevention behavior. However, it is clear that prevention doesn’t only involve an individual approach. In a perspective of habilitation of occupation, the intervention of the oc-cupational therapist will have to move towards the organization of work.
