Summary :
As shown by many accounts in the professional literature, French Occupational Therapists are knowledgeable and creative. However, this empirical literature is characterized by a lack of possible generalization, it shows individual experiences and describes practices very dependent from the practitioner's own point of view within specific contexts. It neither explicitly shows the underlying models that support clinical reasoning nor addresses the construct and the validity of assessments used to evaluate and discuss the outcomes, especially the assessment tools of Activities of Daily Living. The current translation and adaptation of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) into French requires us to reflect more deeply upon the occupational therapy intervention which is the foundation on which this assessment is built. To illustrate this, while using key-concepts in occupational therapy, we put in perspective two approaches commonly used in occupational therapy: the medical approach centred on pathology and the occupation-centred approach. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that when we try to explain links between models, concepts and practice, occupational therapy objectives and positioning can be clarified within the whole multidisciplinary team's participation.
