Summary :
In France, the number of occupational therapy students has increased significantly over the last ten years. This results in a need for additional placements at a national level which occupational therapy schools have difficulties to obtain.
Within the framework of Occupational therapy (OT) schools in France (SIFEF), a working group conducted three surveys to understand the reasons and identify possible solutions : one among the OT schools (Charret et al., 2024a), another among occupational therapists (Charret et al., 2024b), and a third among occupational therapy students (Charret et al., 2025).
The processing of these surveys integrates professional references for rehabilitation therapists and nurses. The functioning of several European and Canadian higher education institutions in occupational therapy are compared and make it possible to consider seven proposals of reflection and solutions to consider this problem which impacts 1260 hours of clinical training (ministère de la Santé et des Sports, 2010) or approximately 40% of training.
In this article, seven proposals are exposed, argued and presented in the form of questions to all stakeholders involved. They concern, for example, the recognition of the specific missions of tutoring, the organisation of placements, the development of practice such as hosting students in pairs, or increasing student autonomy in finding placements.
Each proposal invites all stakeholders to conduct a joint reflection and to consider actions to reduce the shortage of practical placements.
