Summary :
Ethics should be at the heart of care practices but certain organizational contexts do not favor the professional values’ respect. Organizational abuse is widespread, but little discussed, in literature and, more broadly, in society. It is a form of abuse created or tolerated by practices or procedures within organizations responsible for providing care of all kinds to the elderly. Action to counter it can seem complex to initiate. This observation led a group of occupational therapists to become involved in the fight against organizational abuse experienced by many seniors in Quebec’s healthcare system, particularly in several residential care facilities. Gathering many people and organizations, an ethical reflection guide was co-created. This guide is a tool for recognizing, understanding and acting in situations of organizational abuse. It encourages those concerned by this struggle to act together at different levels. It may seem difficult to react to organizational abuse because it is often rationalized by management processes. Nevertheless, it is possible to act. An individual action is not enough when facing this type of abuse, acting together is possible. Everyone has the power to contribute to the fight against organizational abuse. By taking the time to look into it, by coming together to examine it from an ethical perspective, and by challenging the status quo, it becomes possible to counter this phenomenon and foster organizations that are both caring and respectful of everyone’s well-being.
