Summary :
This article is part of a discussion between two occupational therapists who teach mental health. It explores terms and models used in both prac-tices. Occupational therapy focuses on the link between the individual inner psyche and the external environment and relationships. Professional practice is developed from this link, between the inside of the institution and the profession and the changing world outside. The shift from a defi-ciency focused perspective to the bio-psycho-social model questions care in interdisciplinary models. Also, occupational science questions the essence of occupation in mental health. Winnicott’s transitionality theory is specific for occupational therapists and seems to fit well with the Model of Human Occupation. Also, using psychological, biological and social components of occupation makes it obvious to use psychodynamic approaches with behavioural and social approaches. The challenge is to link theory and practice, the “spirit” of occupational therapy and the person’s real life. Meeting patients as citizens helps us build a therapeutic relationship, co-create tools and share fulfilling experiences.
