Context. Care pathways are more and more complex in France due to a high life expectancy, an increase in the number of chronic diseases and greater social and territorial inequalities. In order to coordinate these care pathways and ensure the continuity of care, all the persons involved must communicate, particularly through written reports. It ensures traceability and transmission while complying with regulatory requirements. We looked at the information that healthcare professionals decide, whether or not, to share, with the following underlying question: on which ethical values is based the decision of the professionals to share or protect personal information in written reports within a coordinated care pathway?
Goals. Characterise professional practices, gather facts on decision-making regarding transmission of information, and identify the values that emerge.
Method. We conducted an exploratory survey of professionals involved in coordinated care pathways in France.
Results. The survey confirms the integration of information sharing principles. More information are being shared within the coordinated care pathway than outside. It also sheds light on the nature of the factors that influences the most decisions on whether or not to share information. A variety of arguments is given. Finally, tensions and ethical dilemmas are highlighted, with many hesitations reported.
Conclusion. This study confirms the essential role of ethics regarding decision-making in our coordinated practices. It gives us indications on the values mobilized by professionals in their written reports.
